LUS Fiber Brings World’s Fastest Internet Service to Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, LA – “We have raised the bar in order to make our community a place where technology companies want to locate,” says Joey Durel, City-Parish President of Lafayette, Louisiana.
LUS Fiber, the telecommunications division of Lafayette Utilities System operating the only community-owned fiber-to-the-premise network in the state of Louisiana, announced today that 1 Gigabit service is now available in the Hub City. This ultra high-speed fiber optic connection is ranked with the fastest available worldwide.
LUS Fiber operates one of the nation’s largest municipal fiber-to-the-premise networks utilizing the only technology capable of delivering symmetrical speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second (or 1,000 Megabits per second) to the end user. Now businesses in Lafayette will have access to speeds that are roughly 20,000 times faster than dial-up and more than 100 times faster than a typical broadband connection.
Currently, available Internet speeds in the United States rank 11thglobally, far behind world leaders Japan and South Korea. However, with companies such as LUS Fiber which are focused on propelling their communities forward by providing access to affordable ultra high-speed fiber optic connections, the United States has the potential to advance in those rankings.
“Gigabit service from LUS Fiber is one of the most robust Internet offerings on the market today,” says Terry Huval, Director of Lafayette Utilities System and LUS Fiber. “We built this community network with a promise to the people of Lafayette that we will work hard to provide them with new opportunities through this unique, state-of-the-art fiber technology…and that’s just what we’ve done.”
Most communities nationwide are forced to purchase Internet service from telephone or cable providers whose networks relay heavily on existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires or coaxial cable. Fiber-to-the-premise, the technology used by LUS Fiber, transmits data from LUS’s switching equipment all the way to the customer’s home or business using light pulses over glass tubing or optical fiber. While DSL and cable can provide download speeds up to 12 Mbps and 50 Mbps respectively fiber-to-the-premise networks can deliver symmetrical (download AND upload) speeds at 1 Gbps, making this technology far superior.
“Once again Lafayette carves out a place among the best in the world,” continues Durel. “Our city is on America’s radar. We have the best food, the most optimistic people, the best festival and the fastest, affordable growing income of all metropolitan areas. And now we are offering the fastest Internet speeds in the world. Our future truly is what we make of it. What a great time to live and work in Lafayette, Louisiana!”
